  • I actually faced an issue today, I was visiting a family of Syrian refugees whom arrived in France three months ago. The issue we have i France is that school is no longer mandatory after sixteen years old, so we find ourselves having to integrate youth who have no studying background and no language tools into the labor market. They usually want to learn and study but they do not benefit from government financial support before the age of 25. What can we do with newly arrived asylum seekers passed sixteen years old ?

  • During the interviews two young persons she is working with were present.

Trainer

  • I work with youth taking it case by case . I co-construct with them their personal and professional project along with my professional network among the region. I can sometimes call an interpreter but depending on the funds. I usually have to use images to communicate. I use Goggle and cryptos. I use logos and it helps, it takes a while to have them recognize logos of different organisms they have to deal with. One of the family I work with have put little post-its all over their apartment, translated into their own languages, and I think it is a smart way to quickly learn the language. I realize each day that our cultures are really different. We do not share the same educational backgrounds. I realized that the cryptos we use for toilets do not ring any bell to all those young Syrians coming from refugee camps. I recently organized a summer camp for a group of newly arrived young asylum seekers, and we have tried to transmit some of our social habits through images. I think that for programs such as the humanitarian corridors, it would be great to make the families become familiar with logos and cryptos before they arrival to Europe, for them to feel less lost among arrival.

  • In Lebanon I used to be able to say whatever I wanted it was easy for me to communicate. When I arrived in France. Rules and laws are completely different here, the society is not only different, but very difficult. Here I am obliged to adapt to french rules and sometimes as a veiled lady I feel discriminated. It is a mixed feeling because I feel discrimination at first sight, and then I understood that in the french society, if I start smiling, it becomes easier and then people become extremely nice after a few first exchanges. Lots of smiles are needed. They are nice afterwards.

Young person

  • Yesterday I helped my father to go look for a job. I help him because since we arrived in France it is very difficult for him to understand things here. He is old. I also talked about my self at the agency but I lack experience, my CV is empty and I do not hold a driving license. I am hosted in the country side and need to drive. On top of that I am veiled. Yesterday was at first very exciting and positive but I felt a bit sad because I felt that nothings can actually be for me, for my own profile. I would like to understand better why I can not easily find a work. It is hard to find someone willing to interpret for free. Maybe I would like at least a video so even my parents could understand what are the processes we have to do. They do not read nor right and it would be easier for all of us.
